Artificial leather is a synthetic material made by coating fabric or non-woven fabric with synthetic resins and additives, designed to mimic the appearance, texture, and performance of natural leather. Depending on the type, its core components can be broadly categorized into two main types:
PVC artificial leather (polyvinyl chloride)
This material uses polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as the primary coating material, mixed with plasticizers, stabilizers, pigments, and other additives. It is low-cost, waterproof, wear-resistant, and easy to clean; however, it has poor breathability and a relatively stiff feel, and may harden or crack with prolonged use. It is commonly used in low-end luggage, furniture, and floor coverings.
PU Synthetic Leather (Polyurethane)
This material features a polyurethane (PU) resin coating applied to a backing fabric. PU leather has a soft feel, good elasticity, and better breathability than PVC, and its texture is closer to that of genuine leather. It is widely used in mid- to high-end apparel, footwear, luggage, and automotive interiors. Among these, microfiber synthetic leather (such as Alcantara®) belongs to the high-end PU leather category. It uses a microfiber base fabric and offers performance nearly on par with genuine leather, with superior abrasion resistance and breathability.
In addition, new types of eco-friendly synthetic leather are gradually emerging, utilizing bio-based materials (such as pineapple leaves and mushroom mycelium) as the substrate, which is then coated with a PU layer.
